On March 7, 2010 the Kiwanis Club sponsored the 15th annual Ugly Dog Contest at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. The event raises money for local animal charities and allows shelters to showcase dogs in need of adoption.

This year’s winner was Rascal, a purebred Chinese Crested. Rascal is a celebrity, and although this was his first time competing in this event, he already holds numerous ugly dog titles.

Five dogs competed for Ugly Dog at the contest. Last year’s winner, Chomper took third this time around. Chomper is the mascot for San Diego Animal Rescue and is still in need of a home.

Other categories at the event included: cutest dog, best mutt, most unusual markings, most handsome, most beautiful, best costume, and dogs who look like their owners.

Here’s a video segment that Animal Planet did on Rascal in 2009. He’s one ugly dog, but as Rascal’s owner, Dane Andrew says, “It’s the beauty inside and not what’s on the outside.”
